North of Normal creates elevated journeys through Iceland for those looking for something beyond the expected.

True connection to a destination can't be bought. But it's what we offer.
North of Normal creates tailor made journeys through Iceland for those looking for something beyond the expected. The real country, up close: weather shifting over a glacier, a guide who knows when to turn off the road, a table set in a place that should not have one. Formerly Eskimos Iceland, we have planned travel here for the world’s most discerning travel companies and their guests since 2000. Over the decades we have built close relationships with the finest hotels and lodges, chefs, pilots and private guides, and every journey is built from scratch, around one traveller at a time. The comfort is a given. The difference is how you see the country. Some of the places we go are famous for good reason, and we know when to get there. Others are places most visitors drive past, with people they would never otherwise meet.

What we care about.
We believe travel should leave a place better than it found it, and that takes more than a certificate. We hold the highest level of Vakinn, Iceland’s official quality and environmental certification, and we keep raising the bar, working towards more international recognition. Most of it comes down to how a journey is planned. Fewer stops, longer stays, one valley known properly instead of five seen from the car. Slower travel is kinder to the country, and it is almost always the better trip. Where the money goes matters as much. We build each journey around family-run farms, local guides and small producers, so what our clients spend stays in the communities that make the place worth visiting. And we work to make Iceland open to everyone, not only those who find it easy to get here.

Questions worth answering
Private travel in Iceland comes with a few practical questions. Weather, timing, access, safety, partners, payment, what can be planned and what should probably be left alone. Here are the things that tend to come up before a conversation starts.
Who do you work with?
How long has North of Normal operated in Iceland?
What makes you different from other DMCs in Iceland?
What does “high-end” mean in Iceland?
Where in Iceland do you operate?
How do you handle weather and last-minute changes?
Do you take care of groups?
How do you approach sustainability?
How do we start working together?
Get to know us
Thirty people, one office in Reykjavík, and most of us have been here long enough to know the hotel managers, the chefs and the mountain roads by first name. Among us you'll find a sommelier, a licensed real estate agent, a taxidermist, a champion of glíma (Iceland's old wrestling style) and between us we speak more than ten languages. None of that is in the job description. All of it ends up in the journeys.
